Lion Rampant Store by Scotweb: the world's finest saltire products
In the days when flags were used to identify opponents in battle, King William I "The Lion" (1143-1214) adopted as his heraldic device the king of beasts 'rampant' i.e. rearing up with three paws outstretched. This became the Scottish royal coat of arms and was incorporated into the Great Seal of Scotland for official documents. Legend has it that the inspiration came from King William's own lion that he supposedly kept in Edinburgh castle. Many modern artists still portray the lion with claws and head of similar size as people traditionally believed these equally important. Although a lion rampant can be fat, thin, hairy, bald, happy or angry, it must be in the rampant position, coloured red, and with tongue and claws of blue. As part of Scotweb, the most established online retailer of Scottish goods, The Lion Rampant Store is able to present an unmatched range of goods evoking this historic symbol - from gifts and jewellery, to clothes and home ware. |
